Summer in Connecticut means school is out, pool parties are on the calendar, and families are spending more time outdoors. A backyard pool can be the centerpiece of summer fun, but it also comes with important safety responsibilities.
A pool fence does more than define your outdoor space. It helps protect children, pets, guests, and anyone enjoying your property while providing peace of mind all season long. The good news? When you work with Orange Fence & Supply, our team helps ensure your fence meets applicable code requirements while complementing your home and landscape.
Are Pool Fences Required in Connecticut?
Yes. According to Section 421 of the Connecticut State Building Code and Connecticut General Statutes Public Act 99-140, any property with a swimming pool containing 24 inches or more of water must have a minimum 4-foot enclosure surrounding either the pool area or the property itself. The enclosure must include a self-closing, self-latching gate designed to prevent access by small children.
In addition to a fence or barrier, Connecticut law also requires a pool alarm that sounds when a person or object weighing 15 pounds or more enters the water.
Key Connecticut Pool Fence Requirements
While homeowners should always verify requirements with their local municipality, some of the primary statewide requirements include:
Barrier Height
Pool enclosures must be at least 48 inches (4 feet) tall.
Self-Closing, Self-Latching Gates
All gates must automatically close and latch after opening.
Limited Openings
Openings in the fence must be small enough to prevent the passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere.
Ground Clearance
The maximum clearance between the ground and the bottom of the fence is generally 2 inches.
Above-Ground Pools
Special requirements apply when barriers are mounted directly on an above-ground pool structure.
Pool Alarm Requirement
Pools must be equipped with an alarm capable of emitting a warning sound of at least 50 decibels when an object or person weighing 15 pounds or more enters the water.
It is important to note that local municipalities may have additional permitting or administrative requirements beyond state regulations.
